Terai Janatantrik Morcha (Terai Rebellion Front) has taken official responsibility of the killing of Mr. Purna Bahadur Sunar issuing a press statement signed by Mr. Ajad, Central Member and Western Regional Command In-charge. The statement reads that they have demanded all the hill origin Nepali to leave the Terai immediately. In addition, they threaten to continue such type of brutal killings more in future in the name of Terai Liberation from Pahadi Ruler.

More than 17 human rights and civil society organizations have strongly condemned the killing by Janatantrik Mukti Morcha and appeal to the state for stern action against the perpetrators to sustain lasting peace in the country.

Kathmandu, August 9- DNF and Dalit communities are terribly shocked with the sad and untimely demise of Mr. Purna Bahadur Sunar, DNF District President of Kapilbastu who was shot dead by unidentified group of people at 7:30 pm yesterday evening (9 August 2007) on his way back to home close to Gorshinge area of Kapilbastu district. No any official information of this killing is received yet. No one has taken owned the responsibility of killing. Now, police authority is investigating to find out the real culprit. Dalit NGO Federation (DNF) would like to strongly condemn this heinous killing and appeal to all the concerned people and organizations to extend support by expressing solidarity for stern action against the culprit together with compensation to the bereaved family.

ICDR) condemns the murder of Mr. Purna Bahadur Sunar, a Dalit activist

International Commission for Dalit Rights (ICDR) condemns the murder of Mr. Purna Bahadur Sunar, DNF’s District President of Kapilvastu district of Western Development Region of Nepal . Mr. Sunar was shot dead by the unidentified group in August 09, 2007 at 7.30 PM while he was on the way to home. Mr. Sunar was a dynamic leader of Dalit community and respected personality in his hometown. He has been serving successfully as a District President of Dalit NGO Federation (DNF) Kapilvastu District Committee. Dalit NGO Federation and Dalit community have lost a great leader.

International Commission for Dalit Rights urges Nepal government to take immediate especial investigation and redress for his grieving family. We call Government for the immediate prosecution against those responsible for criminal affirms. The murder of Mr. Sunar is an example of growing arbitrariness against Dalit Rights movement.

The ICDR appeals Nepal Government to ensure healthy security environment for Dalit Rights Defenders, so they could carry out their work effectively without any restriction or arbitrary interference by any groups. We also recall Government to improve security situation before Constituency assembly.

ICDR supports the Dalit movement to establish inclusive democracy along with proportionate representation of Dalit and other social excluded groups before constituency assembly in Nepal .

We would also like to urge an international diplomatic initiative to resolve the prevailing inequality, social exclusion for Inclusive democracy in Nepal .
