What this site is

Common Water is an independent information site about Dalit rights and caste discrimination in Nepal. It is not affiliated with any organisation, political party, commission or authority, and it does not speak for any community or person.

The name comes from a simple image. For generations, refusing to share water was one of the clearest signs of untouchability. A shared spout and a shared basin stand for the equality that Nepal's law now promises.

How the guides are written

The guides explain history, law and the rights movement in plain language. They rely only on general facts that can be checked in public sources such as the Constitution of Nepal, national laws and reporting by recognised institutions. Where sources disagree, for example on the exact penalties in the 2011 Act, the guides leave the figure out rather than guess.

The site does not publish personal stories, names of private individuals or claims made on behalf of organisations.

Not legal advice

The guides are general information. Anyone facing discrimination should seek help from the police, the National Dalit Commission, the National Human Rights Commission or a lawyer.
